Every person runs an internal 24-hour clock. This circadian rhythm regulates processes ranging from the sleep-wake cycle to hormone levels, and one observation from it is directly useful to lifters: world records are typically set in the late afternoon, around 4 to 5 p.m.

How do elite athletes use this?

Should you move training to the afternoon?

No. The record-clustering observation is about a single maximal performance, not about years of training adaptation. The schedule you can actually keep beats the schedule that theoretically peaks. If moving to evenings takes you from four sessions a week to two, the trade is a loss.

There is no reason to move your training, and no reason to ignore the finding either. The place it pays is measurement.

When should you test a one-rep max?

The answer is not a particular hour but the same hour every time. A relative strength score is built on your Big 3 one-rep max total, and what you want from it is a trend across months, not one day's absolute figure. Test at 7 a.m. in March and 7 p.m. in June, and the training effect and the time-of-day effect land on the same curve with no way to separate them.

So the practical rule is two lines. First, always schedule max testing in the same window — if you train mornings, test mornings; you do not need to move to the afternoon. Second, record which window it was. When you eventually enter something with a fixed start time, knowing the conditions your numbers came from makes your target weights far more accurate.

Some variables outrank time of day. The night's sleep before, the last meal, and accumulated fatigue across the training week all move a maximal effort more than the clock does. Fixing the testing hour is the last layer you add after those are managed, not the first.
