When a shirt fights your overhead press, the seams are the problem, not the fabric

When a shirt drags your torso upward as your arms go overhead, the culprit is usually the shoulder seam. A standard set-in sleeve runs its stitching straight across the top of the shoulder — the exact spot that has to stretch most when the arm rises, and the spot that stretches least because it is stitched. A raglan moves that seam to a diagonal running from armpit to collar, deleting the catch point entirely, and an underarm gusset feeds the fabric an overhead rep needs from the armpit instead of the hem. Four-way stretch is a secondary question.

Read enough workout-shirt reviews and the same kind of sentence keeps appearing: this tee has a raglan back, meaning no tension whatsoever no matter what you're doing; that one adds an underarm gusset for durability; another uses straddle stitching that supports without compromising range of motion. None of those sentences is about fabric. All three are about where the seams were placed, and that is what decides whether a shirt fights you overhead.

Why does a set-in sleeve catch?

A conventional tee joins body and sleeve in a curve over the top of the shoulder. Raise your arm overhead and the fabric across that shoulder has to open up more than anywhere else — while a seam stretches less than the knit around it. So the least extensible line sits exactly where the most extension is needed. Whatever the shoulder cannot supply gets pulled from somewhere, and that somewhere is the hem. That is why the shirt crawls up your stomach on every press lockout.

What do raglans and gussets actually change?

A raglan cuts the sleeve on a diagonal from armpit to collar. With no stitching over the shoulder cap, there is no seam left to catch as the arm rises. An underarm gusset inserts an extra panel beneath the arm, creating slack right where it is needed — the shirt sources its fabric from the armpit instead of the hem. It pays twice, because the armpit is where sweat and friction concentrate and where cheap tees blow out first. A gusseted shirt survives the free-weight area longer.

What each seam feature does

  • Raglan back — removes the seam over the shoulder cap. The difference is largest in overhead presses, chin-ups and wide-grip work.
  • Underarm gusset — adds slack under the arm, buying range of motion and durability in one panel.
  • Side slit seams — open the hem at the sides so the shirt does not grip across the hips and ribs.
  • Flatlock seams — press the stitching flat, cutting friction where a barbell or a pack sits against the fabric.
  • Straddle stitching — the compromise that adds support without taking range of motion back.
  • Chest room — shirts cut for weightlifters add width across the chest specifically, which is not the same fix as going up a size.

So how much does the fabric matter?

Fabric owns sweat and odour. A four-way stretch knit resists you less in any direction, and a polyester–Tencel–spandex blend can hang slim without constricting. Mesh sets breathability and drying speed; anti-odour treatment sets how many wears you get between washes. All of that is comfort. Whether your arm gets overhead is decided by the seams.

What a lifter should check first

On a day when the overhead lockout feels wrong, separate the body from the clothing before changing anything else. Run the same warm-up movement twice — once in the shirt you are wearing, once in a loose tee or without one. If both feel identical, the shirt is innocent and the issue lives on the mobility side. If they differ, a raglan or gusseted top solves it outright. Choosing a compression top is covered separately. Either way, if clothing can move your Big 3 numbers, that is an equipment variable, not a training one — so fix it before a testing session rather than during one.

If shoulder pain or arm numbness persists overhead after changing shirts, clothing was never the problem. Do not add load while pain appears at end range, and get it looked at if it continues.

Why does my t-shirt ride up when I lift my arms overhead?
