A massage gun does not loosen muscle, it raises your pain threshold

Percussive massage devices strike at 2,000–3,500 percussions per minute and produce an immediate increase in range of motion without reducing maximal strength. How long per muscle?
Study protocols run 30 seconds to 5 minutes per site. But the range-of-motion gain shows up mostly within the first one to two minutes and then flattens. Ten minutes on one calf spends time rather than buying effect. One to two minutes per muscle, and under five minutes total before training, is the working dose.
The effect also expires quickly — the added range holds for a few minutes to something like ten. So a massage gun is only useful immediately before the movement you want the range for. Working the calves in the morning and squatting in the evening are two unrelated events.
What actually changes
The most reproducible finding is that percussive massage increases range of motion about as much as static stretching, without the drop in force output. In one representative result, five minutes of percussion on the plantar flexors increased ankle dorsiflexion range while maximal voluntary contraction was unchanged — a direct contrast with long static stretching, which can temporarily reduce force.
The mechanism is neural, not structural. Rapid percussion stimulates mechanoreceptors, which lowers pain perception and raises stretch tolerance. The muscle is not longer; the same joint angle simply hurts less, so you get further into it. That is why the effect is immediate and why it fades fast.
What does not change
Soreness scores drop a little, but markers of muscle damage such as creatine kinase and next-day maximal strength show no consistent improvement. It feels less sore; it is not repaired faster. Miss that distinction and you add volume on top of a body that has not recovered.
Two marketing claims have no support. A massage gun does not tear apart fascial adhesions, and it does not flush lactate. Lactate accumulated during training clears within roughly an hour regardless of treatment, and it is not the cause of the soreness you feel a day later.
Most range-of-motion results come from large muscles like the calves and hamstrings, measured in a short window right after treatment. The safety rules are simpler — avoid bony prominences, the joints themselves, the front of the neck, and superficial nerve paths (inner elbow, outside of the upper calf), and do not use it with acute injury, bruising, varicose veins, anticoagulant use, or clot risk. When it is worth using
The defensible use is right before a set, when range of motion is what is limiting the position. Ankles too stiff for squat depth? One to two minutes on the calves. Thoracic spine and lats blocking a stable overhead position? One to two minutes there. A tool that opens the angle without costing force output belongs inside the warm-up.
In the log, the inverse is a mistake. A massage gun does not increase your recovery budget, so using one is not a reason to raise weekly sets or skip a rest day.
