The researchers pulled competition records for athletes aged 15 and over from 2013 to 2025, using the World Para Powerlifting database and the open dataset at openpowerlifting.org — 6,064 male and 3,187 female entries. Results were separated by competitive level (national, regional, international), with international split further into World Cup, World Championship and Paralympic Games. Age subgroups were rookie (15–17), next gen (18–20) and legend (45 and over).
What was wrong with the existing standard?

Recalculated that way, minimum standards rise by an average of 51 kg for men and 29 kg for women. The accompanying normative values are expressed as relative strength and broken out by decile for each age category, sex and competition level. Normative strength was highest among Paralympic competitors, then World Championships, World Cups, regional events and finally national events — competition tier tracks the strength distribution directly.
